Do you remember your favourite book from childhood?

Do you remember your favorite book from childhood?

I do, and I think about it every. Single. Week.

I can’t remember the title, publisher, author or illustrator, and I’ve been looking sporadically since 2008.

The book was assigned for summer reading in 2006 when my family moved a small coastal city in the south of Spain. I had just started learning to read properly enough to love books, and I re-read it multiple times a day.

The premise was simple: a collection of stories with animals as characters that cohabited in a small, vibrant town. The last story was about a race organized by the mayor. That’s all I can describe, which is why I still haven’t found it.

Can you imagine giving said details from a school curriculum book to people, expecting a brainstorming session?

It’s also the fact that this brief description has been on the back of my mind for two decades now. The 20th anniversary is coming up and I need to get this book and close a subjectively important cycle.

Yes…The Unicorn Window by Lynette Muir. I borrowed it many times from the library. Sadly long out of print.

Sorry to find out that it’s been out of print. How old were you when you fell in love with it?

Amazingly, I also moved with my family to Spain in the summer of 2006. In our case it was the north, near Barcelona. I don’t know the book you’re talking about but my son might: he was just 5 then. Here’s an articleI wrote about my favourite book as a child. It’s also about an animal character… https://bretthetherington.net/2016/02/14/steinbeck-scuppers-and-trains/

Thank you for your wonderful response. I was 6 in the summer of 2006 and would’ve been in the same grade as your son. There’s a chance that he would’ve had the same assigned summer reading. What a coincidence!

As for your article, thank you for sharing your work. I loved it! And I have read a lot of Catalonia Today for my thesis, particularly from 2010–2016, so another great coincidence. I look forward to reading more of your writing.

Yes, coincidence for sure. Thanks for your kind words too about that piece of mine. It’s great to know that you read a lot of the magazine (and the newspaper it was before that.) We never know how and who our writing reaches, do we?

Yes, I found the book that sparked my desire to read. Tracked down a copy. Most writers are die-hard readers, and on my first post, From Outer Space to Writing for Eternity, I described my reading journey. Thank you for stirring up found memories.

That’s true, one can’t be a great writer without being a great reader first, and throughout. Thank you for your wonderful comment, I’ll be following your work and read about your reading journey!
